Things to do when camping in Ain

Swap the hustle and bustle of daily life for all the quiet, quaintness and quality outdoor adventures on offer when you book a camping holiday in Ain. Invigorating landscapes provide the playground for al fresco adventures and relaxing retreats in the heart of nature.

Sharing its terrain with the neighbouring departments of Jura and Doubs, the unspoiled sprawls of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park features green landscapes, bracing fresh air and beautiful flora and fauna. A popular area of outstanding natural beauty with walkers, hikers and mountain bikers, the park boasts wonderful woodland, pleasant pastureland, rushing rivers and a selection of hills and mountains.

Along with lovely countryside criss-crossed by old roads, walking trails and hiking routes, the historic region of Bugey shows off a rich heritage, especially in the traditional village of Cerdon. A brilliant place for outdoor pursuits including climbing, paragliding, sailing, fishing, mountain biking and horse riding, Bugey also features the Grand Colombier, a scenic summit with breathtaking views over the region.

One of the best places to escape from it all, Dombes and its thousand ponds are especially popular with walkers and bird-watchers keen to spot species of our feathered friends including grebes, terns, heron and mallards. Wandering through the expanses, you’ll not only be able to appreciate the wildlife but also traditional buildings such as farmhouses, towers, abbeys and castles.

For aquatic activities, we’d recommend a day trip to the beautiful banks of Nantua Lake, where visitors can enjoy a variety of water sports such as kayaking, swimming, fishing, sailing and pedalo boating.

With all the charm of rural France, the medieval town of Pérouges counts itself as one of the most beautiful villages in France, and features well-preserved buildings, tightly packed cobbled streets and stunning timber-framed buildings.

Beautiful architecture is on display in Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne, a charming village directly on the banks of the river Chalaronne. The Saint Vincent de Paul House, the gate of Villars and the Church of Saint-André rank among the best tourist attractions in the town.

Bourg-en-Bresse remains a popular day trip for visitors to Ain, due to the town’s stunning Brou Royal Monastery, a flamboyant example of gothic architecture with a truly captivating story.

There are many more tourist attractions to discover in Ain, namely the Savoyard Bresse farms, the spa resort of Divonne-les-Bains, Ferney-Voltaire Castle and The House of Izieu memorial.
