Things to do when camping in Aveyron

With an abundance of nature, Aveyron tugs at your adventurous heartstrings, inviting you to venture into a verdant green landscape in search of new experiences. With blue skies above and fresh mountain air to fill your lungs, you’ll feel invigorated, energised and hungry for many outdoor pursuits

The expansive Grands Causses Natural Regional Park features thick woodland, deep gorges, walking trails, castles and heritage villages. The unspoiled environment is primed for a variety of open-air activities, whether you love walking, fishing, horse riding, cycling or exploring caves.

An equally beautiful area of diverse landscapes, the Aubrac Natural Regional Park boasts scenic pastureland, rolling green fields, rivers, waterfalls and a scattering of charming villages. Discover the park on horseback, by foot or bicycle. Highlights of the Aubrac include Deroc waterfall, Lake Routes, the River Bès and its gorges, as well as the villages of Chaudes-Aigues, Saint-Urcize and Laguiole. For the best panoramas of the park, head to the peak of Puy de la Tuile.

The lakes of Le Lévézou are excellent for water sports, with a host of aquatic activities on offer such as windsurfing, kayaking, sailing and jet skiing. The surrounding area is filled with walking trails and quaint villages. One of the longest canyons in Europe, the Gorges du Tarn provides a great place for rafting and canoeing trips as well as hikes along the meandering river between historic hamlets.

If you stay in or near the commune of Millau while taking a camping holiday in Aveyron, be sure to visit the Millau Viaduct, a wonderful feat of engineering. This record-breaking cable-stayed bridge crosses the land around the river Tarn. Also in Millau, you can visit the Gorges de la Dourbie and Chaos de Montpellier-le-Vieux rock formations.

One of our best recommendations is to save time for a visit to one or more of the departments alluring hamlets, villages and towns. Explore the medieval charm of Belcastel with its eponymous château, the Romanesque art of Conques and its Saint Faith Abbey Church or the beauty of Estaing and its imposing castle.

Worthwhile mentions must go to several other wonderful villages in the region, namely Creissels, Cantobre, Brousse-le-Chateau, Najac, Peyre and Sauveterre de Rouergue. There are as many castles as there are villages, with stunning examples on show at the Castle of Bournazel, Castle Coupiac and Château de Sévérac.

The department has several sumptuous food offerings, including Farçous, savoury pancakes often filled with pork sausage and herbs, and Gâteau à la broche. Lovers of cheese should visit the interesting Roquefort cheese cellars.
