Things to do when camping in Drome

The department of Drome invites campers to enjoy a wonderful escape in glorious nature, where sprawling countryside is complemented beautifully by historic towns, villages and hamlets. Holidaymakers can lose themselves in the nostalgia of townships or in the vast expanses of lush landscapes.

In the Vercors National Park, the terrain is primed for excellent adventures in the outdoors. Blessed with limestone cliffs, meandering rivers, mountain plateaux and forests, the park calls out to the explorer in all of us. Rich in flora and fauna, the reserve is a great place for spotting wildlife so be on the lookout for deer, boars, Alpine ibex and many species of bird.

Beautiful landscapes are also showcased in Baronnies Provençales, a popular Regional Nature Park where pretty rolling vineyards, aromatic citrus groves and sprawling lavender fields decorate the countryside. The park features many walking routes and mountain bike trails, as well as the chance for thrill seekers to enjoy rock climbing, canyoning and paragliding.

Arguably, the most beautiful forest in the department, Saou Forest welcomes visitors to amble along its scenic walking trails in search of captivating landscapes and amazing wildlife such as golden eagles and chamois.

Complementing the natural splendour of the Drome, the department’s cities, towns and villages ooze character and culture, and promise history and nostalgia in bucket loads.

The capital of the department, Valence is the gateway to the south of France and enchants visitors with its age-old buildings, beautiful riverside location and café terraces. Historical highlights in the city include Cathedral of St. Apollinaris, Church of St. John the Baptist and the House of Heads. Guided tours of the city are easy to arrange on arrival, as are river cruises on the Rhone.

Featuring remnants of its medieval past, the village of Mirmande is arguably one of France’s most beautiful and makes a great place to take a stroll. Explore the leafy sloping streets before sampling some local cuisine in the village’s restaurants. If you have a sweet tooth, the town of Montélimar will be a treat for campers who arrive to sample its famous nougat.

One must see attraction while taking a camping holiday in Drome is the Postman Cheval’s Ideal Palace, a historic monument built by Ferdinand Cheval. The building is a celebration of cultures, religions and mythology and will enchant you the minute you set eyes on it.

Other notable attractions in the department include Grignan Castle, The Hermitage Vineyard, Suze-la-Rousse Castle, Aiguebelle Abbey and the Combe Laval road.
