Things to do when camping in Manche

Join us on a camping holiday in Manche and you’ll discover that this wonderful destination in the north of France has so much to offer the active traveller.

The department is home to Mont-Saint-Michel, one of the nation’s most iconic and popular tourist attractions. Emerging gracefully from the sea, the UNESCO listed Benedictine Abbey sits on the island commune and features a host of captivating clerical buildings including a church, cloisters and refectory, as well as beautiful gardens. The island is easily reached on foot, by shuttle bus or by horse and carriage.

Manche, and indeed the wider region of Normandy, is well known as the location of key moments in WW2. There are several museums and monuments dedicated to WW2 including the Utah Beach Landing Museum, Omaha Beach, D-Day Experience and the Airborne Museum.

As the department features miles of coastline, it’s no surprise that Manche has numerous museums dedicated to its age-old relationship with the sea. The best picks for nautical fans include Cité de la Mer and Tatihou Maritime Museum.

Like most other regions of France, Normandy boasts several enchanting castles and château, a few of which are located in Manche. We’d recommend a visit to one or all of the architectural feats at Château de Pirou, Ravalet Castle, Château de Gratot and Château de Nacqueville.

At Château de Vauville, the beauty of the building itself is more than rivalled by its stunning botanical gardens. With more than 900 semi-tropical species of plants and flowers, the garden feels like it belongs a million miles away from the shores of northern France.

For an insight into the culture and relaxed way of life in Manche, as well as the chance to sample sumptuous seafood, we’d recommend a visit to one of the department’s seaside resorts. In Barfleur, one of France’s prettiest fishing villages, holidaymakers can walk along the colourful quayside. Affectionately known as the “Monaco of North”, Granville is home to the fashionable Christian Dior museum and the blissful beach of Plage du Plat Gousset.

If you visit Manche on a camping holiday with the kids, you can keep them entertained with a day trip to the Champrépus Zoo, Ange Michel Amusement Park or the Alligator Bay Reptile Park.
