Camping Holidays In Poitou-Charentes

Enjoy the sunny island of Île de Ré, the beautiful beaches lining the coast, the charming Cognac country and the appealing sprawls of countryside in the region’s “green Venice” while camping in Poitou-Charentes. Combine relaxing recreations with activity packed adventures in this amazing French region.

Things to do when camping in Poitou-Charentes

The sweeping western border of Poitou-Charentes is decorated by beautiful beaches, gorgeous bays and idyllic islands, so it’s no small wonder why many visitors flock to the seaside. The Charente-Maritime department boasts many fine beaches, namely the stretches of gorgeous sands at Grande Plage at Saint-Georges-de-Didonne or Boirie Beach in Saint Denis de Oléron.

The waves of the Atlantic Ocean beckon lovers of water sports to make a splash while enjoying some water skiing, surfing, sailing or kayaking. You can also indulge in some sea fishing, and make the catch of the day if you’re “reely” lucky.

Along with gorgeous white sandy beaches, the island of Île de Ré features plenty to see and do including Phare des Baleines Lighthouse, Ernest Cognacq Museum, Lilleau des Niges Nature Reserve and Notre-Dame-de-Ré Abbey. You can feel a similar ambiance on Île de Oléron, which also boasts lovely beaches and attractions such as Fort Boyard and Phare de Chassiron Lighthouse.

There are plenty areas of outstanding beauty in the region, with a few flourishing national parks that will attract holidaymakers in search of pleasant ambles in the lap of nature. Marais Poitevin National Park is a wooded reserve with marshland that provides the perfect place to spot geese, ducks, spoonbills and other wading birds. Aptly nicknamed the Green Venice, you can boat down the network of canals while enjoying the gorgeous nature that passes you by. The landscape Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park is filled with green fields, limestone plateaus, rivers and no shortage of lovely flora and fauna.

In the sprawling green hinterland of the region, you’ll find numerous captivating chateaux that tempt you to learn their history and marvel at their architecture on a camping holiday in Poitou-Charentes. Fine examples include the extremely well preserved Château d'Harcourt, the enchanting Castle of Riddles in Pons and the historic Château de La Rochefoucauld.

Poitou-Charentes is home to many historic harbours and culturally rich towns. A visit to the pleasant port cities of Royan and La Rochelle will yield many opportunities to view maritime themed museums and attractions. Other notable cities in the region include Limoges, which is famed for its decorated porcelain and the classic French provincial city of Poitiers.

There is plenty to keep young campers entertained in Poitou-Charentes. Popular attractions for children include Futuroscope High-Tech Theme Park featuring 3D and 4D rides, La Palmyre Zoo, La Rochelle Aquarium, The Valley of the Monkeys Primate Park and Les Antilles de Jonzac Aqua Park.
