Vacation parks on Funen

Funen is great! Funen is Denmark's third-largest island, with its central location on the map of Denmark. Driving off the highway and into the rural surroundings, you will experience beautiful nature with hills and valleys. Funen has long been known for its good farmland, which has contributed to the livelihood of many wealthy farmers over the years. This is reflected in the many beautiful country houses. While travelling through Funen, do yourself a favour and stop at the many small farm stores that are often signposted along the road. They often sell homegrown fruits and vegetables.

Experiences on Funen

Odense is home to a zoo that really shouldn't be missed: voted the best in Europe, and it shows. Children will feast their eyes on lions, monkeys and penguins while learning all kinds of things through play. Everywhere there are play corners, interactive exhibits and surprising vistas. Not just a fun outing, but one that sticks.

Those who wants to see even more animals up close can drive on to Naturama in Svendborg. Here everything revolves around the animals of sea, air and land - from enormous whale skeletons to graceful birds and imposing predators. The light, sound and impressive presentation make you feel as if you are in the middle of a nature documentary. An impressive visit, especially for curious children.

Egeskov Castle is also a must-see that should not be missed during a vacation on Funen. This is no standard castle visit - the moated castle looks like a knight might gallop out of the gate at any moment. The surrounding park is huge and beautifully landscaped, with mazes, tall tree houses and plenty of room to play and run around. Inside, there's everything from classic furniture to a surprisingly fun exhibit on camping and the outdoors.

In downtown Odense, you'll literally walk through the stories of Hans Christian Andersen. His birthplace, located in an attractive street with colourful houses, is still completely intact. In the Fairytale Garden, his stories come to life in a playful way, and in the Hans Christian Andersen House, you really step into his fantasy world. Fairytale characters pop up everywhere, and it is almost as if you yourself are playing a role in one of his famous stories.

Funen is bursting with places that will stay with children and parents alike. From animals and castles to fairy tales and nature - there is something new to experience every day.

The beautiful nature of Funen

As soon as you dive into the nature of Funen, it seems as if time stands still for a moment. Along the coast, the water sparkles in the sunlight, and in the forests, you can smell the moss and hear the soft rustling of the leaves.

A picnic with the family among the flowers, a long walk in the woods, or just listening to the birds singing with your shoes off - Funen has places where you can find yourself. And if you feel like a little more adventure, the Øhavsstien is highly recommended. This hiking trail winds more than 220 kilometres around the South Funen Archipelago and is perfect for those who love nature and challenges. Whether it is a short hike of a few hours or a multi-day adventure with the backpack on, the views along the way remain impressive. Gently rolling hills, rugged coastlines and always that fine Danish light.

Also beautiful: Svanninge Bakker, just above Faaborg. Here, the hills roll over the landscape like a green blanket, with little paths inviting exploration. Ideal for a quiet afternoon outdoors. No traffic, no crowds - just fresh air, room to run and lots of beautiful views.

Local flavors

Funen is known in Denmark as "the country's larder" - and you can taste it. Everywhere you go, you'll find fresh, local produce that seems to be on your plate straight from the land. Whether it's crunchy vegetables, homemade jam or freshly baked bread, eating on Funen just feels good.

Many of the old castles and mansions have been transformed into cosy dining spots, where you'll be served traditional Danish dishes in atmospheric surroundings. Think stews, fresh fish or sweet potatoes, all made with local ingredients. Kids are welcome, too, by the way - there's often a kids' menu as well as room to play outside.

And then breakfast.... If there's one thing you absolutely must taste, it's the famous brunsviger. This soft, airy pastry with a sweet, caramel topping is truly a local treat. Perfect for on the breakfast table or just in between with a cup of coffee. Ask for it at the bakery or supermarket - chances are it's already smiling at you from the display case.
