Western Hungary borders Burgenland in Austria to the west and extends to the east around Lake Balaton. Western Hungary borders Slovakia to the north and Slovenia and Croatia to the south. The varied landscapes of western Hungary offer endless attractions to explore, where you can experience many beautiful cities. Hungary is also known for its thermal baths, which you can of course also enjoy in Western Hungary. Perhaps it's a surprise, but Hungary also produces good wine, and Western Hungary is a particularly favorable area for wine production, which is why you can tour many vineyards and visit the cozy wineries.

Cities worth seeing in western Hungary

Sopron is located on the Austrian border and is considered the most loyal town in Hungary, as the town's inhabitants voted to become part of Hungary rather than Austria in a referendum after the First World War. In Sopron, you can experience the iconic Fire Tower, which symbolizes the revival after the city was devastated by a major fire in the Middle Ages. The city has many exciting museums, cozy restaurants with high-quality gastronomy and relaxing thermal baths. The city of Győr is best known for the Benedictine monastery of Pannonhalma, which is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The monastery building is a 1000-year-old landmark where wine production and lavender cultivation are still part of the monastery's remit. Another city worth visiting is Pécs, which bears the stamp of a true Mediterranean experience, despite Hungary being a landlocked country.

The scenic experiences of western Hungary

Western Hungary offers more than just exciting cities. The area also offers many nature experiences, where you can explore lakes and mountains and immerse yourself in large forests. The Fertő-Hanság National Park attracts cyclists as well as anglers, hikers and ornithologists with its rich flora and fauna, which makes camping in this area particularly appealing. The national park is home to Lake Fertő, one of the largest lakes in Europe, which is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Of course, Lake Orfű near the city of Pécs is also worth a visit, which is also close to the Mecsek Mountains. On the slopes of Mecsek, which reaches an altitude of 682 meters, you might spot a very rare peasant rose! It is also possible to drive to Lake Balaton and enjoy the many beautiful swimming spots of the popular lake and try your hand at water sports.
