Things to do when camping in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence

While on a camping holiday in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence , you simply have to visit the stunning Luberon Regional Nature Park, an area blessed with mountain peaks, chateaux, gorgeous villages, meandering rivers, abbeys and sprawling green countryside.

A symbol of Provence, lavender paints the landscapes a rich purple while the lovely aroma of the plant fills the air. The Valensole plateau is one such area of the department where the rolling lines of lavender stretch as far as the eye can see. The best time to visit the fields is July, when the plants are at their fullest and most colourful.

Another fantastic highlight of the region, and visited by holidaymakers from around the globe, the dramatic Verdon Gorge cuts through the department. Breathtaking canyons and chasms provide stunning vistas, while the lakes and meandering rivers of the national park are perfect for a range of water sports.

The best panoramas on offer in the Verdon Gorge can be found by hiking the trail to the viewpoint at Point Sublime. On the L'Imbut Trail, arguably the best hiking route in the entire park, visitors can walk along trails that hug tightly to the canyon walls, while adrenaline junkies can savour exhilarating outdoor activities such as white water rafting, kayaking, rock climbing and canyoning.

Settling high up in the lofty plateaux of the region, several lakes with impossibly blue waters are worth visiting, especially for water sports and lakeside walks. Our recommendations would be Lac Sainte-Croix, Lac d'Allos, Lac de Castillon, Lac de Quinson and Lac du Lauzanier.

The department has no fewer than 12 towns that were awarded "Villages et cités de caractère status", which are typically merited to villages that feature remarkable architectural heritage. Scattered throughout Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the villages in question are Annot, Castellane, Colmars-les-Alpes, Cruis, Dauphin, Entrevaux, Lurs, Mane, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Riez, Seyne-les-Alpes and Simiane-la-Rotonde.

Our top three picks from the 12 would be Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Castellane and Mane. In Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, visitors can walk the charming narrow streets before stopping by the Notre Dame de Beauvoir Chapel, while in Castellane, they can experience the Notre-Dame du Roc and St. Victor Church. In Mane, holidaymakers typically visit The Salagon priory and its garden, museum, and library as well as the Romanesque Bridge and Castle Sauvan.

Other notable attractions in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence include the Citadelle de Sisteron, Entrevaux Medieval Fort, Ubaye Valley, Allos Valley and Château d'Allemagne-en-Provence.
