Things to do when camping in Bouches-du-Rhone

With so much to do on a camping holiday in Bouches-du-Rhone, you will struggle to do everything you want in just one trip. However, the beauty and diversity of the department might just make you return year after year.

Although our campsites nestle in lovely locations deep in the heart of the region, special mention must go to the fantastic coastal areas of Bouches-du-Rhone. If you have time, make the trip to the Mediterranean Sea shores and spend a day on some wonderful beaches. The best of the best include Bonneveine Beach and Prophète Beach in Marseille, Crin Blanc in Saintes Maries de la Mer and Grande Mer Beach in Cassis.

One of the department’s best areas of natural beauty, the Camargue also lies on the coast. A sprawling expanse of wetlands, woodlands, lakes and pretty villages, the regional park is home to the famous wild white horses, black bulls and pink flamingos. Enjoy hiking, walking, birdwatching and horse riding as well as the park’s nice beaches.

A natural wonder of Bouches-du-Rhone, the Calanques National Park stretches between Marseille and Cassis, and showcases rugged sea cliffs, beautiful bays and impossibly stunning emerald green water. Campers have the choice of exploring Calanques by foot on a hike or can reach the bays and cliffs by boat or kayak.

In the Alpilles Natural Regional Park, one of France’s smallest parks, you’ll find waymarked trails through flowering fields, fragrant citrus groves and vineyards. The area is reasonably flat with a few peaks, making it an ideal place to explore by bicycle.

For some of those who go on a holiday to Bouches-du-Rhone, it wouldn’t be complete without visiting one of the department’s famous Provençal villages. Whilst there are wonderful examples scattered throughout, we recommend stopping by Baux-de-Provence, Noves and Fontvieille. A stay at one of our most northern campsites benefits holidaymakers with a chance to hop across the Durance River to visit the famous Luberon commune of Provence.

In Marseille, the chief city of the department, visitors are treated to a modern city with plenty of tourist attractions including The Old Port, Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, Palais Longchamp Grand Park, the Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean and the Frioul archipelago.

The pace of life is slower in Aix-en-Provence, the birthplace of Paul Cézanne and home to top attractions such as Cours Mirabeau, Château La Coste, Fontaine de la Rotonde and of course, Cezanne's studio.
