Things to do when camping in Gironde
Although there are seemingly infinite amounts of beaches that stretch the length of the coast, special mention must go to the southern tip of the department. Close to the border with Landes, the stunning Arcachon Bay features several lovely beaches such as Plage de l'océan, Plage du Pereire and Plage Du Truc Vert to name but a few.
The bay is an area of natural beauty, where the natural reserves of Banc d’Arguin and Lège-Cap-Ferret provide great places to walk and cycle, appreciating the diverse flora and fauna as you go. In the middle of the bay lies the unspoilt island of île aux Oiseaux, a brilliant place to go birdwatching.
Journeying south from Arcachon, you’ll arrive at the famous Dune du Pilat, a massive mountain of sand that boasts the accolade of Europe’s Highest Sand Dune. Visitors who ascend the dune will be treated to amazing 360 ° views of the ocean and pine forests. Bring a picnic to enjoy on the ridge of the dune before descending for some time on the beach or a walk through the woodland.
Sharing part of its area with neighbouring Landes, you'll find an oasis of peace in the oceanfront Landes de Gascogne Regional Park. Along with gorgeous walking trails through the forests, horse riding routes and the chance to kayak down the Leyre River, the park is home to the interesting Grande Lande Ecomuseum.
A large scattering of lakes and lagoons make their home near the central coastal part of the department, with Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans and Étang de Lacanau providing great places for day trips. By the sea, you’ll find several water sports providers as well as the fantastic Aqualiday Water Park.
It’s clear that Gironde is a wonderful destination in which to embrace the great outdoors and seek out both active and amiable al fresco activities, but the department also boasts several places of cultural and historical interest. The vibrant city of Bordeaux is famous for its delicious wine production, so it’s natural for visitors to arrange a day trip around a Bordeaux Wine Tasting tour or visit to the Cité du Vin Exhibition Space and the Le musée du Vin de Bordeaux Museum. Ensure you make time to see other attractions in the city, especially Place de la Bourse, Bordeaux Cathedral, the Grand Théâtre and the Pey Berland Tower.
Along with more opportunities to sample fine wines, a trip to beautiful Médoc rewards holidaymakers with the chance to explore amazing castles. Enjoy the intrigue and architecture on a tour of Château de Guilleragues, Castle Roquetaillade and Château Malromé while on a camping holiday in Gironde.
