Things to do when camping in Haut-Rhin

A camping holiday in Haut-Rhin opens up a whole world of possibilities for the avid outdoor holidaymaker, as well as campers who love to delve deep into the history, heritage and culture of their chosen destination.

A heavenly blend of landscapes await visitors to the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park, where rolling green valleys sprawl out for as far as the eye can see and mountain peaks emerge beautifully from the verdant countryside. With no fewer than 14 peaks, the park is a paradise for hikers, while leisurely walks, biking trips and horse rides are also possible. The best mountain peaks for stunning trails and beautiful views include the high point of the park at the Grand Ballon and the picturesque summit of the Hohneck.

There are a few lakes within the department, namely the colourful waters of the Black Lake, the White Lake and the Green Lake, all of which offer lovely hiking trails through waterside woodland. A fantastic place to take a pleasant stroll is the Nature Reserve of the Petite Camargue in the south of Haut-Rhin, where a feast of flora and fauna are waiting to be appreciated.

Away from the lush countryside, the towns and villages of the department boast beauty in their own right, and so much nostalgia. A highlight of a holiday in Haut-Rhin is a day trip to the enchanting town of Colmar, a stunning place with its famous Little Venice quarter. With half-timbered houses, the town boasts picturesque streets, romantic flower-covered bridges and a host of attractions including the Dominican Convent, Unterlinden Museum and a historical covered market.

The fortified town of Riquewihr is an equally beautiful commune with houses and streets in the same character as Colmar, and is found on the department’s famous Wine Trail route. A visit to the town should include stops at the Tower Museum of Thieves, the Upper Door and the Butterfly Gardens. It’s also a good base from which to explore the castle and gardens of Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg that lie to the north.

Many other towns and villages in the style of Colmar and Riquewihr that are worth a visit include Kayersberg, Eguisheim and Ribeauvillé. In the fascinating open-air Alsace Heritage Museum, visitors can discover traditional Alsatian buildings such as old blacksmiths, clog makers and carpenters.

The other top highlights of the department for sightseeing opportunities include the Cité du Train interactive museum, the Zoological and Botanical Park of Mulhouse and Château de Saint-Ulrich.
