Things to do when camping in Puy-de-Dome

Adventures in the wild outdoors and discoveries of the history and heritage of the department are the mark of a successful and highly enjoyable camping holiday in Puy-de-Dome.

In the aptly named Auvergne Volcanoes National Park, visitors can explore a vast green landscapes of natural beauty filled with volcanic massifs, hiking trails, mountain lakes and a few castles and historic abbeys.

The iconic volcano of Puy-de-Dome, from which the department takes its name, stands head and shoulders above all the other caldera in the region. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with amazing views out over the landscape and ruins of a Gallo-Roman temple. Standing at 1886m above sea level, the highest non-volcanic peak in the area is Puy De Sancy, another wonderful summit offering stunning panoramas.

For an interesting insight into the seismic sites of the region, holidaymakers should Vulcania, a brilliant volcanology park museum with interactive exhibitions, 5D films, scientific theatre and much more.

With calm blue waters and gorgeous natural surroundings, a few lakes nestle high in the plateaux of the park. Chambon suits holidaymakers who prioritise recreation as the lake offers a variety of aquatic activities such as kayaking, windsurfing, fishing and pedalo boating. Lake Ayat, the largest in the region, is another popular destination that offers plenty of water sports.

There are many more recreational activities on offer in the department such as horse riding in the Livradois Forez Park, guided hikes in the Auvergne Mountains and microlight flights.

The chief city of the department, Clermont Ferrand features elegant mansions, fine houses and unique lava stone fountains. Tourist attractions worth considering include the gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, the renaissance Basilica of Notre-Dame du Port and Montjuzet Park and Gardens.

The department is also home to a plethora of quaint and picturesque villages that give holidaymakers an insight into the culture, cuisine and way of life in Puy-de-Dome.

Close to the Puy De Sancy mountain, the charming village of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise is best described as a typical medieval town, with beautiful shops and houses from centuries long gone, as well as places of interest that include Church of St. Andrew, Chapel of Vassivière and Boinchoux Farm. Other lovely towns, villages and hamlets worth visiting for their history and heritage include Saint-Nectaire, La Bourboule, Le Mont-Dore, Billom and Royat.
